Why Setbacks Make You Feel Stuck (And Like You’ve Lost Progress)

"Emma" had been doing really well.
She felt clearer, lighter… more like herself. Her mindset had shifted, her energy felt different, and for the first time in a while, things were starting to feel aligned.
Then, she started to have difficulties- unexpected bills, stress with work and her kids, tension in her marriage.
The following week, her family came to spend the weekend.
Nothing dramatic happened. No big conflict. No obvious trigger.
But when it was over, something felt off.
She was exhausted, unmotivated, and disconnected from the version of herself she had just been. It felt like she had taken ten steps backward in a matter of days.
Her first thought?
“Did I just lose all my progress?”
The Moment It Feels Like Everything Slips
This is the part that doesn’t get talked about enough.
You can be doing the work: healing, growing, shifting your mindset, and then suddenly, you feel like you’re right back where you started.
It’s confusing. It’s discouraging. And if you’re not careful, it can make you question everything.
But what Emma didn’t realize in that moment is this:
She hadn’t lost her progress. She had hit another layer.
Why Family (and Familiar Environments) Hit So Deep
Certain environments carry history, especially family.
Even when nothing is said out loud, your body remembers:
old roles
old expectations
old emotional patterns
old versions of who you used to be
So, when you step back into that environment, your nervous system can respond before your conscious mind even realizes what’s happening.
You may find yourself:
feeling smaller
second-guessing yourself
more reactive or withdrawn
unusually tired
Not because you’ve regressed…
But because something old has been activated.
The Exhaustion Isn’t Weakness. It’s Processing.
After everyone left her house, Emma slept for four hours.
At first, it felt like she was shutting down.
But what if that wasn’t shutdown…What if it was recovery?
When your system processes emotional activation, especially things you’ve outgrown, it takes energy.
A lot of it.
That fatigue you feel after being around certain people or environments?
It’s often your body recalibrating.
The Real Reason It Feels Like You’ve Lost Progress
Here’s the deeper truth:
Growth raises your awareness.
Before, you may have been in those patterns without even noticing.
Now, you feel the shift.
You notice when your energy drops. You recognize when something feels misaligned.
And ironically, that awareness can feel like regression.
But it’s actually the opposite.
You’re Not Going Back, You’re Going Deeper
Emma didn’t lose her progress.
She saw something more clearly than she ever had before.
A pattern, a response, a layer that hadn’t fully released yet.
Instead of ignoring it, she took time to process it.
She gave herself space. She booked a session right away and did the inner work. She allowed the feeling to move through.
Within an hour or two of the session, she contacted me to say she had come back, not to where she was, but to a more integrated version of herself.
What To Do When This Happens to You
If you find yourself in this place, here’s what matters most:
Don’t make it mean something is wrong.
Instead:
Give yourself space
Let your body reset (I can help with that :)
Notice what came up without judgment
Gently process instead of pushing through
Remind yourself: This is part of the work (Because it is)
Final Thought
The moment you think you’ve lost your progress might actually be the moment you’re becoming more aware of what’s now ready to heal.
That’s not failure, that’s movement.
Because sometimes what feels like going backward…is actually going deeper.
