Hidden Culprit: Giving Problem vs Receiving Problem

Struggling with Giving or Receiving? The Hidden Pattern Behind Feeling Stuck

What if many of the struggles people experience could be traced back to two core patterns: a giving problem or a receiving problem?

After working with many clients over these past four years, I’ve noticed that a surprising number of emotional, financial, relationship, and personal struggles often fit into one of these categories. Once you begin to recognize the pattern, it can create powerful awareness, and awareness is where change begins.

The Giving Pattern

When giving is out of balance, it usually shows up in one of two ways: fear or exhaustion.

1. Fear-Based Giving

This can sound like:

  • There isn’t enough.

  • I can’t spare the money.

  • I don’t have time.

  • I shouldn’t take the risk.

  • Better to stay where I am than face the unknown.

This type of giving block often comes from scarcity, past experiences, or fear of uncertainty. Even when opportunities arise, the nervous system may choose what feels familiar over what could be better.

2. Over-giving and Depletion

This is the opposite side of the same imbalance.

It can look like:

  • Saying yes when you mean no

  • Prioritizing everyone else first

  • Giving until you’re drained

  • Feeling resentful or unseen

  • Neglecting your own needs

Some people know how to give, but not how to give with healthy limits, with boundaries

The Receiving Pattern

Receiving struggles often show up as resistance to having, holding, or fully allowing good things into your life.

1. Resistance to Having

This may look like:

  • Constant procrastination

  • Starting but not finishing

  • Waiting for the “right time”

  • Self-sabotaging progress

  • Always believing success is in the future

There may be a part of you that wants change, and another part that doesn’t yet feel safe receiving it.

2. Anxiety and Regret

Receiving requires presence.

When your mind is stuck in the future, anxiety can take over. When your mind is stuck in the past, regret can block what is available now.

Both patterns interrupt your ability to receive peace, opportunities, joy, and progress in the present moment.

3. Difficulty Keeping What You Create

Sometimes people can create success, but not sustain it.

Examples include:

  • Money comes in, then disappears

  • Weight is lost, then regained

  • Healthy habits start, then fade

  • Motivation comes and goes

  • Projects begin but never stabilize

This can be frustrating when you know you’re capable, but consistency feels just out of reach. Worse, you may label yourself as lazy or cursed with bad luck.

What If You’re Not Broken?

Many people assume they are lazy, unlucky, weak, or flawed.

But often, what looks like failure is really an imbalance in giving or receiving.

When you identify the true pattern, you stop fighting yourself and begin understanding yourself.

A Gentle Question to Ask Yourself

Which feels more familiar right now?

  • Do I struggle to give in healthy ways?

  • Do I struggle to receive and keep what I desire?

  • Or do I swing between both?

There is no shame in either pattern. They are simply signals.

Final Thoughts

Awareness changes everything.

When you can recognize whether you’re dealing with a giving issue or a receiving issue, you create the opportunity to respond differently, with more compassion, intention, and balance (sometimes starting with yourself).

Sometimes the shift you’ve been seeking starts with asking a better question and creating the space to receive the answer.
